Recap: Truckee River Clean-up

Several of us met at Fisherman’s Park II in Reno to be a part of the Truckee River Clean-up organized by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). We had some time to talk with people while we waited for a ranger to drop off supplies. He had to be in several places simultaneously, so by the time we got there we were ready to work.

We picked up trash side by side with other people of the community and stenciled “No Dumping” signs near sewer grates. This doesn’t sound glamorous, but we were able to honor Jesus by serving Reno. [continue reading »]

Help The Solace Tree

Rob and Heather Woods serve at The Solace Tree, which provides grief support for children and teens.

This past Sunday Rob Woods shared how he and Heather, his wife, have been working with The Solace Tree, a non-profit organization that provides support to children and teens who have experienced death of a loved one. Heather was already volunteering in a variety of ways before Rob joined her. Most recently they were at Grief Camp offering up their skills in photography and videography.

Dear Daddy, I'm praying for you. I miss you so much.

Recap: Free Car Wash ‘08

Dave's job was to drive the traffic to the car wash.

The free car wash went great. Dave and Jose found themselves the only car washers that day which could have been discouraging, but they pressed on and found it to be a blessing.
They weren’t sure how it was going to work out exactly. Dave decided to wave the sign for the free car wash and Jose would approach them with a strange request: “I’d like to wash your car for free.” [continue reading »]

Free Car Wash This Saturday

Eddie the Tire King

The next community service project is this Saturday from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. We’re in a different location from last year’s car wash, so be sure to check the event details. We’ll be in a location with fewer BMWs and more Hondas. It’s a great event for newcomers to try out this serving thing we do.

Recap: Otter Pops

We had a sign made. ;-)

On Saturday afternoon, a dozen dedicated Coram Deoites braved the hundred-degree heat to bring a little bit of light to the people enjoying the river in downtown Reno. Coolers were unloaded, and instructions were given. “Our first job is to convince people we’re not giving away frozen Kool-Aid,” Jose said.

Jeremy

As it turned out, the problem was not in giving the Otter Pops away, but in finding enough to give out to the crowds that started to gather. Once again, those of us who doubted the impact that so small a thing could have on people went away certain that we could not have spent those two hours better. [read and see more]
