On a beautiful Sunday morning, a group of people filtered into the Reno United Blood Services building. Most of these people seemed to know each other and started to gather around and talk to each other. There were new faces so introductions, handshakes and hugs took place as the nurse on duty mentioned to everyone, “I remember you guys, some church or something like that. You guys were so happy last time you were here.”
On June 24th, Coram Deo had their 2nd Blood Drive for 2007 and had 75% more participants than last time. Jose Skinner, Coram Deo’s Service Pastor and organizer of the Blood Drive, commented on the increase by stating that, “This is the second time this year and I think we just did a better job of communicating this drive. We really encouraged Coram Deo-ites to bring a friend and gave everyone invitation cards to hand to their friends, it seemed to work. For our next Blood Drive, we want to partner with a business in our neighborhood and have the Blood Mobile in their parking lot. We want to see this become contagious in our community!”
Asked why they chose to spend their Sunday morning giving blood, Rob Woods answered, “There is just something about a healthy person helping out someone that is in need, someone that I will never meet or know. It’s the perfect example of Christian giving totally anonymous!”
John Leeming, a Coram Deo elder, added, “I invited my daughter, so it was a special father-daughter date. It was something special we could do together to help others in a way that most people don’t think of.”
Jose added, “When giving blood you help more than just one person. The blood is separated into components so that several people may benefit from one blood donation.”
“It was so cool to see Coram Deo-ites invite friends! I met some really great people that do not attend Coram Deo but came just to help us out with our Blood Drive,”added Beth Masquelier, (Beth was the only one to give 2 PINTS OF BLOOD–men included!) “and the fact that the nurse remembered us as a church was a big compliment and what we are all about at Coram Deo!”
“It’s great seeing and hearing that,” said Jose. “We want Coram Deo-ites to invite their friends and help serve our community. They may never set foot in a worship service at Coram Deo but they will see Jesus through our actions in our community. That defines us, that defines Coram Deo.”
