“How much is your car wash?”, “Free.”, Free?” “Yes, Free.” Here are a few bucks for your work.” Sorry, we don’t take donations, the car wash is totally free.”
This conversation happened over and over again during the two hours that we washed cars on South Virginia Street in Reno.
“We really didn’t realize how hard it would be to offer a free car wash,” said Dawson Lange, Coram Deo’s Teaching Pastor. “People just could not wrap their minds around a FREE, no strings attached, car wash.”
So what would possess a bunch of people to stand out in the heat and wash cars for total strangers and not ask for anything in return? Susan Skinner, one of the many volunteer from Coram Deo said it best, “To meet and bless our neighbors!”
“Jesus washed feet, I washed someone’ tires,”said a soapy, smiling car washer. “We talked to a lot of neat people,” said Teri Meek. “As they waited for their car to be washed, they’d sit down under the shade of our awning, enjoy a bottle of cold water and share a little bit of their lives with us. I really hope that they left feeling as refreshed and blessed as I did!”
“This was a great turnout! We washed over 30 cars in two hours, talked to many great people, and we had every generation from Coram Deo out here volunteering their time!” declared Jose Skinner, Coram Deo’s Service Pastor and coordinator of the Free Car Wash.
“I had a blast! It was so much fun rubbing elbows with my church family, and at the same time doing something good for our community,” said Dave Schmidt. “Teamwork was a key to getting all those cars looking nice in a short period of time.”
