Manna Bags

Homelessness and hunger is a constant problem in Reno. Nevada’s homelessness per capita is double the national average. Manna BagsWe see the homeless at stoplights and exit ramps asking for help. As followers of Christ, what do we do?

Here’s one option: give them a Manna Bag. It’s a Ziploc bag filled with daily essentials for those in need—kept in your car for such an occasion. It’s not enough to last them all month, but it might help them make it through the day, like God’s gift of manna to the Israelites.

What Goes into a Manna Bag Here are some items we pack in the bags. Manna Bags

  • granola bars
  • raisin boxes
  • toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • socks
  • phone card
  • social services info
  • other non-perishable food items
  • other toiletries

Here are some items not to pack in the bags.

  • personal information
  • nuts
  • chocolate, things that will melt in the sun

Why Manna Bags?

  • It’s an alternative to giving money if you’re concerned with how it’ll be spent.
  • It’s an alternative to doing nothing if you’re concerned with following Jesus.
  • They’re inexpensive to make.
  • They’re small enough to keep one in your car.
  • They won’t solve the greater problem of homelessness or hunger, but it’s something you can do for one person right now.
